The Omega-3 Fatty Acid Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) Correlates Inversely with Ischemic Brain Infarcts in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

چکیده
The omega-3 fatty acid (n-3 FA) eicosapentaenoic (EPA) reduces stroke in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Whether EPA affects or cerebral small vessel dis-ease atrial fibrillation (AF) remains uncertain. EPA, docosahexaenoic (DHA), docosapentaenoic (DPA), and alpha-linolenic (ALA) were determined by gas chromatography 1657 AF from the Swiss Atrial Fibrillation study. All underwent brain MRI to detect ischemic infarcts, classified as large noncortical cortical infarcts (LNCCIs); markers of disease, (SNCIs), number microbleeds, white matter lesion (WML) volumes. Individual total n-3 FAs (EPA + DHA DPA ALA) correlated LNCCIs SNCIs using logistic regression, numbers microbleeds a hurdle model, WML volumes linear regression. detected 372 (22.5%). inversely prevalence (odds ratio [OR] 0.51 per increase 1 percentage point 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.29–0.90). higher LNCCI (OR 2.48, 95%CI 1.49–4.13). No associations found for DHA, ALA, FAs. Neither individual nor In conclusion, correlates but not disease AF.

Effect of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained atrial arrhythmia conferring a higher morbidity and mortality. Despite the increasing incidence of AF; available therapies are far from perfect. Dietary fish oils, containing omega 3 fatty acids, also called polyunsaturated fatty acid [PUFA] have demonstrated beneficial electrophysiological, autonomic and anti-inflammatory effects on both at...
متن کاملThe Impact of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Use on the Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease
Fish oils containing omega-3 fatty acids (OM3FA) are widely prescribed in the management of dyslipidemia. An association between OM3FA and reduced risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) has been proposed. We examined the impact of OM3FA exposure on the risk of developing AF in patients with cardiovascular disease. Data was obtained from electronic medical records of patients seen by our cardiology se...

BACKGROUND Although various strategies for prevention of brain disease have been implemented, no substance has been found to be advantageous for prophylaxis against brain injury. OBJECTIVE While previous work in our laboratory and others have shown positive effects using the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in post-injury treatment following traumatic and ischemic insults, we wis...

The clinical efficacy of fish oil and high-purity eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester (hp-EPA-E) for treating cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been reported. Fish oil contains saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids that have pharmacological effects opposite to those of ω3 fatty acids (ω3). Moreover, ω3, such as EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), do not necessarily have the same metabolic and ...
متن کاملOmega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation: Mechanism and Current Evidence in Atrial Fibrillation.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent arrhythmia and is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Available pharmacologic antiarrhythmic therapies are often ineffective in preventing the recurrence of AF, possibly because these drugs target a single pathophysiological mechanism. Given their beneficial effects on ventricular arrhythmias, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (...
